HOSPITALITY

Madilina Cottage,
Ernakulam

Completed Project 2023

Nestled within the gardens of a riverside resort, this cottage sits quietly by the banks of the Periyar. The architect imagined a structure shaped by terrain, movement, and views — a direct response to the client’s request for a home with no rigid boxes. What emerged is a single, fluid curve that rises from the ground, follows the land’s natural slope, curves past trees, creates shelter, and folds back into the earth — shaped as much by context as by intent.

Set on a steel frame and clad in ACP panels, the form remains light and sculptural. A compact bedroom opens out to the verandah, while the curved rear volume houses a bathroom open to the sky. Glazed openings along the main façade bring in generous daylight and extend the space visually toward the riverside.

While the overall form leans toward the futuristic, it quietly carries familiar threads — a charupadi along the façade, woven Indian curtains, and warm, textured finishes that root the space in Kerala’s domestic traditions.

A small footbridge leads across the garden and echoes the same language — its wave-like rhythm offering a sculptural prelude to the architecture beyond. Together, the built elements create a unified flow across land and water.

The structures don't assert itself on the land; it follows it — adapting to its contours, anchored in its place.
